Best Places to Work in the Valley is a local contest designed to identify the best places of employment in the metro-Phoenix area based 100% on employee opinion survey results. The program was founded in 2003 by BestCompaniesAZ, The Great Place to Work Institute (research partner for Fortune Magazine 100 Best Companies to Work for in America and HR Magazine), and our local Media Partner, the Phoenix Business Journal. In 2004 we transitioned over to research partner, Quantum Market Research, the exclusive research partner for Best Places to Work competitions in 40 US cities. As a result, participants have access to the country's largest database of comparative benchmarking.

Ranking Arizona is the outcome of the largest business opinion poll in Arizona. Each category is selected by the staff of Arizona Business Magazine for the general public to vote on and are based upon business activities of Arizona's business professionals.

Ranking Arizona is based purely on voters’ opinion. It is not based on annual revenue or number of employees. Instead, participants who vote give us their recommendations based on quality of product, service and who they would recommend doing business with.

The winners are ranked by revenue over the most recent two years. The formula is based 1/2 on actual dollar growth over those two years, and 1/2 on percentage-revenue growth over those same years. This formula puts both small and large companies on an even playing field. Each have an equal shot at making the list. Any formula using just one half of the equation would favor either small or large companies. This formula has been used and remains unchanged throughout the history of the ACE Awards program.
